IVF stands for in-vitro fertilization and was first put into successful use in 1978. It involves fertilising a harvested human egg in a laboratory and then placing the fertilised egg in the uterus. IVF Procedure:

Step 1 – Hormone Therapy

The hormones can cause a lot of changes in the woman’s body. Weight gain is one of the most common side effects of the therapy. Step 2 – Egg Harvesting

Egg harvesting is the process of retrieving the eggs that have been released. The progress of the release is carefully monitored via ultrasound on a regular basis. Once the egg is released, it needs to be retrieved. This is done through a simple procedure. The eggs need to be retrieved successfully for the treatment to continue.

Step 3 – Insemination and Fertilization

 

Once the eggs have been retrieved, the husband or male partner needs to provide the IVF clinic with his semen. Once it has been determined that the sperm are healthy enough to facilitate an IVF pregnancy, only then is the treatment taken forward. The sperm collected is then introduced to the harvested eggs in petri dishes, to fertilize the egg. This fertilization process takes anywhere between 2-5 days.

Step 4 – Embryo Implantation

Once the egg has been fertilised, an embryo is formed. This embryo consists of a mass of cells and is the very beginning of your future child. A healthy embryo is selected and reinserted into the woman’s uterus. Once inside, it needs to attach itself to the uterus in order to grow into a foetus and eventual baby. There is always a chance that the embryo does not latch onto the uterus. In such cases, the treatment procedure needs to be repeated all over again.
